Bohemian Maternity & Pregnancy Photographer in Richmond, London

Somehow Rachel makes pregnancy look like the most beautiful, peaceful, joyful thing in the world. Probably because it really is such an incredible, empowering experience to go through as a woman but also because, let's face it, she totally rocked this vintage dress and showed off her bump to perfection in the photos. I can't wait to revisit her in the springtime and capture her little one. I have a few more images from this session with Rachel and her daughter at their home which I will share later this week so watch this space... I really love photographing pregnancy. Maternity sessions have an intimacy and a vulnerability about them that I adore. There is something very special about awaiting the arrival of a little one, and about the metamorphosis we, as women, go through as we bloom and blossom.

Tips for how to photograph your children

As a baby and family photographer I get a lot of people asking me for tips on how to photograph children. For me, photographing kids is about capturing their personality, their cheekiness, their playfulness and their spirit. My shoots aren't directed or choreographed in some stark white studio, quite the opposite in fact. I specialise in capturing real moments as they happen, catching the genuine magic that children make as they go about their day.

Because little ones have a tendency to be on the move a lot of the time, the best way to photograph them if you don't know how to control your camera's settings manually, is to catch them when they're settled into activity. Set up some of you child's toys or books in a nice airy space in your home where you have access to lots of natural light. Think about the toys you choose when creating this activity, the ones that will photograph well are the ones to pick. Things like well made wooden toys or pretty illustrated books rather than the ugly illuminous dinosaur with flashing lights, (and we all have them!) Before inviting them into the space to play, try to clear any unnecessary clutter out of the room - anything that could be an eye sore in the picture and draw attention unnecessarily away from your child, (think piles of laundry or unsightly toys that may not photograph so well).

Once the room is ready, take a couple of pictures of the toys you've set up in the space to check the light and make sure there isn't anything unsightly in view. Then invite your child in, and encourage them to play. Let them get settled and into their play for a while before you get your camera out, you want them to be unaware of you taking photographs and really content in their natural play. When you think they're occupied, start to take their picture. be discreet, you don't need to ask them to look at your or tell them to smile, in fact by doing that you'll interrupt their play and they may get frustrated. Instead just photograph them as they are, just doing what they do. Once you feel you've got some shots of them playing away you could start to interact with them a little. Ask them what they are looking at or ask them to show you where their nose is or if you have a frog on your head. These simple interactions will help to get them to look your way so you can catch them looking to camera as well as engrossed in their toys.

During my photoshoots I will often spend a long time observing children at natural play before I take their photograph. It helps me to understand how they interact with the world around them and it helps them to feel comfortable and confident in my presence. I prefer children not to be too aware I'm actually photographing them when I work, this way I am able to catch them uninhibited and avoid the fake smiles and 'say cheese' situations that never end up with a good photograph.

The best way to photograph your children and capture their own unique personalities is to take your time, give them space to let them be free, observe while they play and quietly document in the background. It is often the subtle documentary images you create that will be the ones that move you the most when you look back through your family photo albums. Seeing your children at play will transport you back to what life was like, and remind you how magical a time childhood really is.

A winter's mother, daughter shoot: Richmond Park baby photographer

Alda and Anaiya braved the winter's cold one Sunday early last month in Richmond Park and let me take their portraits for a mother and daughter family photoshoot. I love these intimate pictures, the tenderness between mother and child and the way you can almost feel the cold seeping through the colours and tones.

Let's play! A fun filled family photoshoot in Putney, West London

Serevine wanted me to capture her children in the most natural way - at play. It wasn't hard - they were such fun kiddos, full of energy and so very playful with each other. As soon as I waled into their stunning West London home, I was being pulled at the arms to come and see what they'd been making in their garden studio that morning. Serevine has created a dreamy space for her children to grow up in. The studio out back was full to the brim of toys and crafting inspiration and materials and the kiddos set about showing me their latest creative endeavours. I felt like part of their gang while I photographed them happily playing away. There were giggles, and tickles and lots of light hearted play. It's work like this that really doesn't feel like work at all, because I get to hang out with some amazing London families and be a fly on the wall as they do just what they do, making magic everyday.

Columbia Road with Me&Orla

One of the things I love about my job is working with some talented, creative people who share my passion for simple, storytelling portraits.

I had a wonderful morning at Columbia Road Flower Market in London's East End with Sara from the gorgeous blog Me&Orla I felt very honoured to spend a couple of hours with her and her family, taking mostly reportage, lifestyle photos of them enjoying a little day out in London, a city escape from their idyllic life in Yorkshire.

If you haven't read Sara's blog do check it out. She writes beautiful posts on motherhood, living simply and intentionally and life in the country. It's no surprise her stunning instagram account has gathered over 100k followers who love to stop by and see little snippets of her simple life as a mother in the Yorkshire countryside.

We met at The Town Hall Hotel in Bethnal Green where she was staying, before heading to Columbia Road Flower Market. The hotel was beautiful and as we explored some of it's knooks and crannies we stumbled upon a lovely old greyhound dog - the hotel's very own permanent resident, who made friends with Orla in no time.

The flower market is one of my favourite London locations to wile away a few hours on a sleepy Sunday so when Sara said she was headed to the Big Smoke, it seemed like the obvious place to center our family photoshoot. Amongst the blooms, the chaos of the market and the crowds, this little family shared the sweetest, intimate moments.

Giggles galore at this family photography shoot in Wandsworth, West London

It was so lovely to be invited back to this sweet Wandworth based family after my newborn photoshoot with baby Elodie last year. This time I was there to capture the whole family as they went about their busy Saturday morning. There was so much energy at this shoot and of course the odd but of mischief thrown in for good measure.

Celebrating Maya and Jack's First Birthday in the woodland at Pembrooke Lodge, Richmond Upon Thames

Roanne contacted me a couple of months ago looking for a baby and family photographer who could help capture the playfulness and craziness of life with her 4 year old and almost one year old twin babies. She'd had a really tough first year after a difficult birth with the twins and months spent in hospital afterwards. It must have been very difficult for them all, especially sweet Isabella who was the most devoted and doting big sister I've ever met.

We met at Pembrooke Lodge in Richmond Park where the blossom and daisies were in bloom and the temperatures were warm enough for lay out a blanket. Mother and daughter wore matching Charlotte Olympia kitten ballet flats much to the delight of Isabella.

You'd never know to look at them all now just how rough things had been for them in those early months. This family were so full of life and energy - there was giggling, flower picking, singing, clapping and of course a few tears here and there. I was so touched to be able to photograph such a positive family dynamic and capture these dearly loved babies on the eve of their first birthday.
