Natural Mother & Baby outdoor Photoshoot in Richmond Upon Thames

I'd photographed Anastasia with her family when her baby was 3 months old so when she asked to meet up again and do a Mother and baby photoshoot in Richmond Park I jumped at the chance. It was windy and bitter on the morning of the session but she'd wrapped her little one up in layers of wool and the sweetest red socks. Being Russian, Anastasia doesn't feel the cold, I almost fell over when she took off her jacket and while my fingers froze and my nose turned red she looked peaceful and serene snuggling her baby boy. Putting the focus on that special bond between a mother and her child is one of my favourite things about my work. It's so important to capture the mamas who so often get lost in the family albums, choosing to hide behind the lens instead of getting in the pictures themselves. Here are my favourite frames from our morning out in the wild...

I'm pretty sure I'd have had ten babies by now if I didn't get to do this for a living. Meeting new families welcoming new life week in week out gives me my fix of 'newborness' and I literally never tire of it. Life in those first couple of weeks, (well months), is messy, chaotic, full of uncertainties and very different to the life we know before we become parents. There is something so precious about capturing this time for people. Perhaps because I know only too well how fleeting it is, and how one day, these new parents will look back in wonder at how tiny their most precious being could have been.

Here is baby Arthur just shy of two weeks old and about as scrumptious as could be.

As newborn lifestyle shoots go, this one is right up there in my memory bank of keepers.

I find the bigger a family is, the more colourful and flamboyant the shoot. I loved the light and quirks in this house. The way each family member had their turn holding teeny tiny Darcy close and sitting for me to take their portraits with her.  Whilst those images were more traditional portraits, I love how each is unique reflecting the personalities of each family member.

In between the moments of calm there was a lot of life in this session - inevitable with 2 older kiddos darting about the room. I really like that sense of movement, after all life with kids is messy.

The result of our time together is a higgeldy piggeldy collection of images full of light, love and playfulness. Just as all good family sessions should be ;-)

Newborn Photographer, Ealing, London

Florence was about 4 weeks old when I visited her and her family at their flat in Ealing for her newborn shoot. She was a little unsettled that morning wanting to be held and cuddled and rooting to feed lots. People often worry that if they're newborn is unsettled during a shoot then their photos won't work out, but I love the connection and intimacy you get when a baby is being craddled, comforted and soothed. I also love that shoots like this tell a really honest story of these early days. Life is not about perfectly swaddled babies lying in a nest prop, I want to show you the real moments, the ones that take you right back to this season in your life. To remind you what an intensely powerful time this is and how selfless and bonding and love led and life affirming, becoming a mother or father is. I think this shoot does just that.

Whilst I'm based in Richmond-Upon-Thames, I work all over London and beyond. I'm happy to travel if you're excited about having me and my eye capture you and your loves. If you'd like to find out more about booking a home or location session with me, whether it's a newborn photographer you're looking for or a maternity or family photographer, do drop me a note. I'd love to work with you.

Juno's Newborn Photoshoot: Richmond, West London

My brother in law put me in touch with his friend, Chloe after she had a baby. She lived down the road from me and he thought she might like some photos taken of the early days. Deep down I think he just knew we'd click. And we did, straight away!

I arrived at her home early one morning to a warm welcome from their beautiful labradoodle Lottie. We chatted over a cup of tea about baby stuff and the craziness of those first few weeks as a mum. She was breezy and happy and one of the most laid back new mother's I think I've ever met. Her partner Dan was equally unfazed by my being there and willingly filled a bowl full of cadburys mini eggs for us to nibble on during the shoot.

Juno was wide awake when I started photographing them and content to kick her little legs about in their sun filled bedroom. Their old victorian house was full of charm, colour and character. Chloe works in interiors and there was evidence of her impeccable taste in every room.

As with all the best shoots, Chloe and Dan's chemistry was palpable and they doted on their daughter, gently stroking her cheek, nuzzling her nose and pausing for feeds here and there when she needed soothing.

The pictures we made together make me so happy. Happy because I really feel I captured them just as they are, and happy because they put their trust in me and my vision. Even Lottie made it into their family portrait, curled up on the sofa, (where she isn't usually allowed to nestle), keeping a watchful eye over her newest friend Juniper
